If You Continue on That Path
One of the most common questions I get asked is: "How do I know if what I'm doing is the right career for me?"
Or "How do I know I'm not missing out on something else because I'm over here doing this, instead of doing that?"
I get it. Uncertainty is something many people feel when choosing what to do with their lives.
Especially if you're a multi-passionate person who wants to do many different things.
In this post, I'll share with you twelve signs that tell you you're on the right path or at least getting closer to it.
When I quit translation and started pursuing other things, these were the signs that told me which way to go.
If you're trying something new and you're still wondering if you should continue or not, following these signs might be useful for you.
A quick note
Some people, no matter how good they feel about what they're doing, suffer from nasty FOMO (fear of missing out).
They can't stop thinking about what-ifs.
If that's your case, reflect on WHAT exactly you think you're missing out on.
Make a list of things you're afraid you'll never have if you continue down this path, and then go through them one by one and ask yourself:
- How am I so sure I'll never get to have [something you think you're missing out on] if I continue doing what I'm doing?
- Do I really want that?
- If the answer to #2 is "yes," ask yourself: How can I make space for that or achieve that without making drastic changes to my path?
14 Signs That Tell You You're On The Right Path
1. You have fun
No matter how exhausted and mentally drained you feel (every career path will make you feel that way from time to time, no matter what), you have a lot of fun.
Facing new challenges, learning new things, creating the impact you dream about is fun.
If you're happy with what you're doing, you lose track of time, at least every once in a while, while you're doing your work.
2. You feel scared and excited at the same time
Being on the right path doesn't equal not doubting yourself or feeling fear from time to time.
We all get scared. We all doubt ourselves. However, when you're on the right path, that fear is paired with excitement and thrilled.
3. You feel accomplished every night and are excited to wake up in the morning
If you're constantly hitting goals you care about, you don't stay up all night wondering what you're doing with your life.
Also, because the new day can offer you many opportunities to learn, make progress, try new things and spend time doing something you adore, you feel excited when you open your eyes in the morning.
4. You're constantly learning
In my experience, one of the reasons why people feel lost and stuck in life is because they haven't learned anything new and valuable in a while.
If you're on the right path, you find yourself learning new and exciting things constantly.
5. You're surrounded by like-minded people you like
You feel understood by the people you inevitably meet when you're pursuing something you value.
Being on the right path will take you to new relationships of every kind that you enjoy.
6. You're setting and reaching your goals at least monthly
No matter how big or small, you make progress every single week.
When you're thriving, wanting to grow is inevitable.
If you're on the right path, if you're doing something you enjoy and care about, the natural thing is to want to set meaningful goals and work for them.
Setting goals is a sign you have vision and motivation; people who set and reach their goals are usually people who want to make the most out of their lives.
7. You're curious
You feel an insatiable thirst for learning and improving what you're working or in areas related to it.
8. You feel grateful and satisfied
You can feel gratitude in your body, just like you can feel anger, love, and happiness.
Feeling grateful feels like a warm fuzzy inside your chest that makes you feel like your life is perfect just as it is.
If you feel grateful about the things you get to do, the impact you get to make, the people you meet thanks to your job, then that's a sign you're on the right path.
However, this one's tricky.
You can (and it's good for you too) feel grateful even in the midst of terrible circumstances.
You can feel gratitude for your job, no matter how much you hate what you do, your peers and your boss.
Don't let this one confuse you.
9. Giving up isn't an option
No matter how many curveballs life throws at you, when you're on the right path, giving up isn't an option.
Now, stopping, analyzing, and changing your strategy to reach an ultimate goal doesn't equal giving up. So don't get confused.
10. You care less about what people think
Here's why:
Being on the right path gives you a sense of purpose and increases your levels of self-esteem.
When you're on the right path, you do work you love and feel impactful thanks to it.
How could what others think about you take away that kind of joy?
11. You feel motivated regularly
Motivation's a feeling that, like any other feeling, comes and goes.
Don't feel discouraged about your career choice and life if you don't feel motivated 100% of the time.
However, if you're on the right path, you'll feel motivated to tackle your challenges regularly.
12. You feel aligned with your values and beliefs
When you're on the "right" path, you don't betray yourself by doing things that go against your values and beliefs.
13. You don't think so much about the past anymore
I've seen people who feel lost have in common that they beat themselves up a lot for their "wrong" career choices.
They can't seem to forgive themselves for dropping out of college, changing majors several times
14. You've built a better mindset
You see things from a more positive perspective, and, usually, don't let your mind get in the way when it comes to doing things you care about.
Conclusion
In my humble opinion, every single one of these criteria plays an important role for many reasons.
If you meet some but not all the criteria on this post, don't worry; that doesn't mean you have to change careers or that you're doing something wrong!
However, if your gut tells you you're on the right path, but you're not learning new things or hanging out with people who think like you, for instance, you may want to look into that.
Not because you're doing something wrong necessarily, but because there's room for you to grow.
Surrounding yourself with like-minded people can boost your life in every area. These people can become valuable friends or amazing connections; they can keep you grounded, offer you advice, and help you focus on what matters.
I dare to say that second-guessing if you're on the right path is a sign you're not. But don't take my word for it. I probably don't know you personally. What do YOU think about the path you're following?
